Ohio Legislative Children’s Caucus Webinar

Addressing Racism and Social Determinants of Health to Promote Infant and Maternal Wellbeing

Register here

Not all Ohio moms and babies have equitable access to opportunities for long-term health and wellness. In fact, only five states have a higher Black infant mortality rate than Ohio, and despite a 10% decline in Ohio’s overall infant mortality rate since 2009, Ohio’s Black-white infant mortality disparity increased by 26% during the same time period. Institutional racism and inequitable access to critical resources and health services before, during, and after pregnancy persist and are contributing to poor maternal and infant health outcomes, especially for Black and Brown women and their children. Maternal mortality is rising in Ohio also, and research shows that many of these deaths are preventable, taking place often after pregnancy when Medicaid postpartum coverage ends. Ensuring that all women have access to adequate health care is essential for laying a healthy foundation for their children. Join the Ohio Legislative Children’s Caucus to discuss pervasive inequities in infant and maternal health and how Ohio can utilize Medicaid as a critical tool to increase the safety and vitality of all moms and babies in our state.

Nutrition and Physical Activity Strategic Planning Meeting
Mar 4 @ 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm

Join us as we begin planning our strategies that support nutrition and physical activity opportunities for young children and their families in Cuyahoga County.   This virtual strategic planning meeting will challenge us to consider ways to think about our work to have the biggest impact on our community.

We are excited to begin our discussion this week on our coalition’s work focused on the nutrition and physical activity needs of young children.  As a part of our discussion, we are requesting you come to the discussion considering the following:

  • What is within the coalition’s control to address these needs? Please consider our pillars of work:  training and technical assistance, research and evaluation, community collaborations, and advocacy and communications.
  • How are we currently doing? We will:
    • Identify 3 indicators that support the results statement (All children in early care and education are healthy in Cuyahoga county)
    • If data is not available we can develop a data agenda
    • Prioritized list for new or improved data
    • Where would you want to invest resources to develop quality data?
  • What will it take to do better? We will discuss:
    • No cost/low cost solutions
    • Off the wall ideas
    • What does the research say about what works?
    • Information and research agenda
